Lisa A. Lacasse: Heartbreaking to hear that cancer patients and survivors still face difficult financial decisions

Lisa A. Lacasse, President of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), shared the post by American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) on LinkedIn, adding:

“It is always heartbreaking to hear that cancer patients and survivors are still facing tough financial decisions, which in some cases lead to skipping or delaying necessary care.

This situation will worsen if the enhanced tax credits expire, forcing individuals to incur medical debt or even forgo treatment altogether. Congress must listen to these patients and extend these lifesaving enhanced tax credits immediately.”

Quoting American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)‘s post on LinkedIn:

“Failing to extend the Marketplace enhanced premium tax credits would take away many cancer patients’ and survivors’ only quality, affordable health care option and eliminate their ability to receive the care they need to get and stay well.

In our latest Survivor Views survey of cancer patients and survivors:

  • 86% who receive tax credits to afford Marketplace plans say they would have difficulty getting the care they need without the enhanced premium tax credits
  • 81% would consider alternatives that expose them to greater financial or health risk, such as enrolling in high deductible plans
  • Only 25% are aware the tax credits are currently set to expire by the end of 2025

“While sadly not surprising, it is always heartbreaking to hear that cancer patients and survivors still face difficult financial decisions that for some result in skipping or delaying care,” says Lisa A. Lacasse, president of American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).

“This reality will be magnified if the enhanced tax credits expire, forcing individuals to go into medical debt or forgo treatment altogether. Congress must hear these patients’ voices and extend these lifesaving enhanced tax credits immediately.”
