Jasmin Hundal: The Critical Role of Rehabilitation in Cancer Care

Jasmin Hundal, Hematology-Oncology Fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent paper by Cristina Kline-Quiroz et al. published in JNCCN:

“The Critical Role of Rehabilitation in Cancer Care.

As the number of cancer survivors grows, many face lasting physical and cognitive impairments like pain, lymphedema, and neuropathy, reducing their quality of life. Despite clear benefits, rehabilitation services remain underutilized in oncology care.

A recent analysis found that while symptom-specific guidelines (e.g., for lymphedema or fatigue) often recommend rehabilitation, cancer-type-specific guidelines rarely do. General terms like ‘rehabilitation’ lack clarity, leaving providers unsure of where to refer patients. Disciplines like physical therapy, occupational therapy, and rehabilitation psychology need more recognition and precise guideline inclusion.

To close this gap, we must:

  1. Strengthen evidence for oncology rehabilitation.
  2. Involve rehab specialists in guideline development.
  3. Improve referral clarity for providers.

Better integration of rehabilitation can help survivors regain function, reduce symptoms, and enhance quality of life. Let’s work together to prioritize this essential aspect of cancer care.”
