Russell Berman has started his term as SSO President
Russell Berman recently started his term as SSO President for 2025-26.
Dr. Russell Berman is a Professor of Surgery at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, where he holds multiple leadership roles, including Vice Chair for Surgical Education and Faculty Affairs, Chief of Surgical Oncology, and Director of the Surgery Residency Program.
He completed his surgical residency at NYU/Bellevue, during which he also undertook a two-year postdoctoral research fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Following residency, Dr. Berman pursued a Surgical Oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, focusing on apoptosis resistance in metastatic tumor progression.
His clinical practice primarily centers on Melanoma, Sarcoma, and Peritoneal Surface Malignancies.
Dr. Berman has been actively involved in the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) in a variety of leadership roles, currently serving a three-year term as SSO Vice President. He has chaired the Training Committee for two terms and has served on the Finance, Membership, Nominating, International, and Education Committees.
Dr. Berman also chaired the inaugural SCORE Committee and has been elected to two terms on the SSO Executive Council.
He has been a regular participant in the SSO Annual Meeting’s Fellow’s Lounge, meeting with fellows almost every year.
In addition to his work with the SSO, Dr. Berman serves as Chair of the Complex General Surgical Oncology Board of the American Board of Surgery (ABS), where he also chairs the Nominating Committee and serves as Recorder of the ABS Council.
He is a member of several ABS committees, including the Assessment Committee, the Quality and Oversight Task Force, the Video-Based Assessment Task Force, the EPA Task Force, and the Strategic Planning Task Force.
Dr. Berman has contributed as an Associate Editor for JNCI and holds editorial board positions for Annals of Surgical Oncology, UpToDate, and the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Physicians Data Query. He was also the co-chief editor of the CGSO SCORE.
