Paul Brown: Radiotherapy Academy for Benign Conditions
Paul Brown, Professor of Radiation Oncology and radiosurgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, shared a post on X:
“Review: Radiotherapy Academy for Benign Conditions (RT-ABC).
I am currently enrolled and recently completed the online portion of the course offered by the Radiotherapy Academy for Benign Conditions (RT-ABC), and I couldn’t be more impressed with the experience.
I highly recommend this course to any radiation oncologist looking to develop expertise in benign radiotherapy.
What distinguishes RT-ABC:
- Practical, Evidence-Based Curriculum: The course provides in-depth knowledge of radiotherapy applications for a wide range of benign conditions, including osteoarthritis, Dupuytren’s disease, and plantar fasciitis. The curriculum is well-structured and backed by solid evidence, making it highly practical for clinical use. For anyone who has seen him speak, Dr. Shaffer is an excellent speaker and his videos on clinical practice are top-notch. In addition, there is a detailed ‘how to’ coursebook outlining anatomy, physical examination, and field design for many indications including less thought of diseases such as De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis or Patellar Tip syndrome.
- Expert Faculty: Learning from experienced radiation oncologists who are pioneers in the field was incredibly valuable. Their insights and real-world experiences added immense depth to the course content. There are also several monthly online mentoring sessions where we review our cases, receive feedback, and a forum to ask questions. There is also a two-day in-person training for additional information to reinforce your understanding.
- Comprehensive Resources: The course offers a multitude of resources, including video lectures, written materials, clinical protocols, and patient consent forms. These resources are easily accessible and highly beneficial for both learning and clinical practice.
- Business Development Guidance: This includes practical advice on building a successful benign radiotherapy program, covering aspects from marketing strategies to billing and coding.
- Patient Communication Tools: The course provides valuable tools to improve patient education and satisfaction, including pre-consultation and follow-up questionnaires, patient information leaflets, and aftercare instructions. While we do not use these patient information leaflets directly, they serve as an excellent starting point for creating patient education materials tailored to your clinic.
Overall Experience: RT-ABC has significantly enhanced my practice. Before we started our low-dose radiotherapy benign practice, I spent hundreds of hours watching videos, reading manuscripts, and perusing book chapters.
I wish this all-encompassing resource RT-ABC had been available as it would have saved me considerable time and effort. I highly recommend RT-ABC to any radiation oncologist looking to develop their practice or stay at the forefront of benign radiotherapy.
Full Disclosure: No remuneration was received for this review.
Excellent course by Professor Dr. Med. M. Heinrich Seegenschmiedt Dr. Shaffer and Bobby Koneru.“
