Deborah Mlongo Barasa:

“I had the privilege of joining experts, policymakers, and stakeholders at the 8th Kenya International Cancer Conference in Kisumu, under the theme ‘Advancing Cancer Care in Africa in a Rapidly Changing World.’ Cancer continues to be the third leading cause of death in Kenya, and we are dedicated to ensuring that all Kenyans have equitable access to life-saving care.

I am proud to announce that operational cancer centers in Nakuru, Mombasa, and Garissa will soon be joined by new centers in Kisumu, Kakamega, Meru, and Nyeri. These new regional centers will bring essential services closer to our communities, while also reducing the pressure on our national referral hospitals.

Through the Universal Health Coverage framework, the inclusion of cancer care packages under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHA) is helping to alleviate the financial burden faced by patients and their families. We are also focusing on strengthening our workforce and partnerships to enhance early detection, treatment, and research.

A special thank you to the Kenya Society of Haematology and Oncology (KESHO), led by Interim President Dr. Helena Musau and Conference Chair Dr. Njoki Njirani, for organizing this important forum. I would also like to acknowledge the leadership of Dr. Timothy Olweny, Chair of the National Cancer Institute of Kenya, and CEO Dr. Elias Melly, for their unwavering commitment to fighting cancer in our country. Together, we are making great strides in advancing cancer care, ensuring that no one is left behind.”
