Best of European Cancer Summit 2024: “United Against Cancer: Forging New Frontiers”
The European Cancer Summit 2024 took place on November 20 and 21, 2024, at the Radisson Collection Hotel, Grand Place Brussels, and virtually.
The summit’s theme, “United Against Cancer: Forging New Frontiers,” reflected the ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of cancer treatment and prevention. Participants delved into critical issues such as the integration of new technologies, improving access to care, and overcoming disparities in healthcare systems across European countries. With a focus on both scientific progress and policy development, the event served as a springboard for shaping future strategies to combat cancer.
Following the summit, a special Showcase Event for the smartCARE and PROTECT-EUROPE projects took place on November 22, where attendees learned about the innovative projects aiming to transform cancer care and prevention throughout Europe.
The European Cancer Summit 2024 represented a crucial moment for collaboration and progress in the fight against cancer, with participants working together to chart new paths for the future of cancer care in Europe and beyond.

“Privileged to lead ECS2024 special session with Isabel Rubio, honoring Commissioner Stella Kyriakides’s transformative leadership in Europe’s fight against cancer. Together with brilliant minds in oncology, we shape tomorrow’s cancer care.”
“An honour to be with you at the European Cancer Summit. We all share a common vision: to change the realities of cancer. This has been a top priority from the very beginning.
Now the unity we have built, must continue through the powerful actions of EU Cancer Plan.”
“I am delighted to be attending the European Cancer Summit brilliantly organised by European Cancer Organisation today and tomorrow. I am also pleased that, in today’s panel “Stocktaking on Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan: where have we come from, what have we achieved, what are the next frontiers?” the speakers, including Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides, reiterated their commitment to continue advancing the right to be forgotten in the next Commission.
Another special highlight was ECO’s heartfelt tribute to Commissioner Stella Kyriakides, recognising her remarkable contributions throughout her mandate—it was truly moving and I also take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt congratulations.
If you are attending the Summit and would like to connect to discuss the right to be forgotten or tackling financial discrimination against cancer survivors, come say hello.”
“A journey of 4 years within the European Cancer Organisation is coming to an end…today I am attending the last ECO Board and ECO General Assembly… it has been 4 exciting years that have seen an unprecedented development of the organisation. A strategic engagement in the implementation of the EU Cancer Plan and becoming the point of reference in onco-policy.
We created the European Cancer Community Foundation, a foundation that gives individuals and groups to make research that can actively change practice and of course we gave voice to young cancer professionals – the future of cancer care – to actively engage in ECO activities and initiate their own across the disease pathway. We offered the option to associate members to join ECO and work together to the best interest of patients.
I would like to thank Mike Morrissey, my CEO who together we shared numerous exciting and interesting discussions and worked on so many impactful actions. He passionately supported my ideas and vice versa and always provided such an insightful perspective on everything.
In this journey I would like to thank everyone who I had the privilege to work with and especially Matti Aapro and Degi Csaba and all of the Board members we served under my mandate. Of course I would like to thank all the members of the ECO Team. Thank you everyone and keep making the world a better place.”
“Excited to have our inaugural session of Emergencies and Crises Network at European Cancer Summit in Brussels this morning and present our Manifesto to Improve Cancer Care in Conflict Impacted Populations.”

Thank you to Peter Baker , Hein van Poppel and Riccardo Moschetti for organising the Spotlight session on Men and Cancer where some of all the excellent work that Men and Cancer workstream does, as a part of ECO’s Inequalities Network, was presented! And where i had the opportunity to tell a bit about what the Swedish Cancer Society Cancerfonden is doing on Men and Cancer. At next years summit i hope to be telling more about what we have then done in the matter.”

One of truely amazing health leaders who not only put the Europe Beating Cancer Plan into action but also guided us through the pandemic and the challenges it brought.
I am eternally grateful also to Mike Morrissey who will be leaving the European Cancer Organisation but he can rest assured his amazing work has not gone to waste. Thank you both for your amazing leadership and service to Public Health and cancer equity.”

The journey goes on!”
“Uniting for Cancer Care across Europe.
The past two days brought together leading minds in cancer care at the European Cancer Summit 2024 in Brussels. Healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers, patient advocates, and industry experts united to accelerate progress in cancer care and policy.
This year’s theme, ‘United Against Cancer: Forging New Frontiers,’ underscored the critical need for future cross-sector collaboration to continue Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and tackle disparities in prevention, treatment, and survivorship across the European continent and beyond world.
Key takeaways:
Policy advancement: Discussions highlighted the urgent need for harmonized strategies in cancer prevention, screening, treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life care to reduce inequalities.
Research and Innovation: Cutting-edge projects and technology showcased how innovations can transform patient outcomes.
Patient-Centered approaches: Real stories and input from patient advocates underscored the importance of personalised care, and inclusive and holistic support systems.
Collaboration: Stakeholders emphasised the role of partnerships, across countries and sectors, in continuing to build resilient cancer care ecosystems, and expanding the boundaries of cancer care.
As we reflect on the progress made and challenges ahead, one thing is clear: the fight against cancer demands unity, innovation, and action.
Kudos for UZ Gent speakers Yolande Lievens, Miet Vandemaele and Wim Ceelen for their insights and passion.
Newly inspired I’ll bring these insights back to my daily practice and contribute to the current and future where we continue forging equitable, high-quality cancer care for all people affected by cancer.
Let’s continue the conversation.”
The Institute of Cancer and Crisis (ICC):
“We are proud to announce that The Institute of Cancer and Crisis (ICC) has been an active member of the European Cancer Organisation’s Emergency and Crisis Network since day one. This initiative is crucial for addressing the challenges posed by cancer, especially in times of crisis.

This presentation marks a significant step forward in our mission to enhance the resilience of cancer care systems across Europe.
Together, we are striving for a future where every patient receives the care they deserve, even in the most challenging circumstances.
Let’s continue to push for change and support each other in this vital work.”
