Participants delved into critical issues such as the integration of new technologies, improving access to care, and overcoming disparities in healthcare systems across European countries. With a focus on both scientific progress and policy development, the event served as a springboard for shaping future strategies to combat cancer.
Following the summit, a special Showcase Event for the smartCARE and PROTECT-EUROPE projects took place on November 22, where attendees learned about the innovative projects aiming to transform cancer care and prevention throughout Europe.

The journey goes on!”

“It’s vital to empower patients to restrict their data where/when they want, putting them in control. This is one of the most critical aspects of EHDS says Tomislav Sokol MEP.
Very much looking forward to hearing more about Health Data aspects of Cancer Care tomorrow at the EUsmartCARE Showcase, with Mabon ap Gwynfor and Penilla Gunther.”
The Institute of Cancer and Crisis (ICC):
“We are proud to announce that The Institute of Cancer and Crisis (ICC) has been an active member of the European Cancer Organisation’s Emergency and Crisis Network since day one. This initiative is crucial for addressing the challenges posed by cancer, especially in times of crisis.
At the European Cancer Organisation Summit 2024, Prof. Maria (Masha) Babak, PhD presented our manifesto, outlining our commitment to innovative solutions and collaborative efforts in cancer care. This presentation marks a significant step forward in our mission to enhance the resilience of cancer care systems across Europe.
Together, we are striving for a future where every patient receives the care they deserve, even in the most challenging circumstances.
Let’s continue to push for change and support each other in this vital work.”
“Looking forward to day two of the European Cancer Summit. I am continuing to be extremely happy and proud of having met EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides. A cancer survivor, a healthcare worker, a champion for patients’ rights and a tireless policymaker.
One of truely amazing health leaders who not only put the Europe Beating Cancer Plan into action but also guided us through the pandemic and the challenges it brought.
I am eternally grateful also to Mike Morrissey who will be leaving the European Cancer Organisation but he can rest assured his amazing work has not gone to waste. Thank you both for your amazing leadership and service to Public Health and cancer equity.”
“Kateřina Konečná, MEP, member of European Parliament, is participating at the European Cancer Summit 2024 session on Survivorship and Quality of Life. She called for action to protect cancer survivors.
‘During the negotiation of the Consumer Credit Directive, I pushed for the Right to be Forgotten to be included. It was a first and big step. A similar framework should be introduced in the upcoming Mortgage Directive revision, to ensure survivors will access such products after a period of time not exceeding 5 years.'”
“Day 2 of the European Cancer Summit highlighted resilience, innovation, and urgent global challenges. From cancer care in crises to the milestones achieved. We must act with unity and passion. Because Together, a cancer-free future is possible!”
“Uniting for Cancer Care across Europe.
The past two days brought together leading minds in cancer care at the European Cancer Summit 2024 in Brussels. Healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers, patient advocates, and industry experts united to accelerate progress in cancer care and policy. This year’s theme, ‘United Against Cancer: Forging New Frontiers,’ underscored the critical need for future cross-sector collaboration to continue Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and tackle disparities in prevention, treatment, and survivorship across the European continent and beyond world.
Key takeaways:
Policy advancement: Discussions highlighted the urgent need for harmonized strategies in cancer prevention, screening, treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life care to reduce inequalities.
Research and Innovation: Cutting-edge projects and technology showcased how innovations can transform patient outcomes.
Patient-Centered approaches: Real stories and input from patient advocates underscored the importance of personalised care, and inclusive and holistic support systems.
Collaboration: Stakeholders emphasised the role of partnerships, across countries and sectors, in continuing to build resilient cancer care ecosystems, and expanding the boundaries of cancer care.
As we reflect on the progress made and challenges ahead, one thing is clear: the fight against cancer demands unity, innovation, and action.
Kudos for UZ Gent speakers Yolande Lievens, Miet Vandemaele and Wim Ceelen for their insights and passion.
Newly inspired I’ll bring these insights back to my daily practice and contribute to the current and future where we continue forging equitable, high-quality cancer care for all people affected by cancer.
Let’s continue the conversation.”

“On World Pancreatic Cancer Day, we’re discussing how to ensure comprehensive quality Cancer Care. Join the discussion now at the European Cancer Summit! Pancreatic cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths.
To fight it, we need to:
– achieve equitable care for all

– enhance screening programmes
– promote health literacy for early cancer detection
Swedish Minister for Health Care, Acko Ankarberg Johansson, emphasised that the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan was a ‘key initiative’ that helped Sweden among other countries to achieve its current position in providing equitable and effective cancer care: ‘To ensure we fight cancer, we must be coordinated, through structure-based work when and if possible'”
