Petra Ibum Adjah: Can You Spot Cervical Cancer’s Hidden Signs?

Petra Ibum Adjah, Communications Manager for Pink Africa Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Can You Spot Cervical Cancer’s Hidden Signs?

In the early stages of cervical cancer, a person may experience no symptoms at all.

As a result, women should have regular cervical cancer screening (VIA, pap smear, or HPV test).

The VIA test reveals changes in the appearance of the cervix, while the pap smear detects abnormal cell changes.

Both may indicate the possible development of cancer so that a person can take early action to treat it.

The hrHPV (High-Risk Human Papillomavirus) test detects the presence of high-risk HPV types which can potentially cause cancer.

The most common symptoms of cervical cancer are:

  • Bleeding between periods.
  • Bleeding after sexual intercourse.
  • Bleeding in post-menopausal women.
  • Discomfort during sexual intercourse
  • Vaginal discharge with a strong odor
  • Vaginal discharge tinged with blood.
  • Pelvic pain

These symptoms can have other causes.
Anyone who experiences any of these symptoms should see a doctor.”
