Tracey O’Brien: New Campaign by the Cancer Institute of NSW Prioritise Cervical Cancer Screening

Tracey O’Brien, NSW Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of the Cancer Institute NSW, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“NSW has seen a drop in the number of people screening for cervical cancer, with more than 40 percent of eligible people in the state overdue for their Cervical Screening Test.

That’s why the Cancer Institute NSW has launched a new powerful campaign to help drive more people to screen and reduce their risk of this highly preventable cancer.

The stark reality is that more than 70 per cent of cervical cancer cases are diagnosed in people who have never been screened, or are not up to date with their screening. Despite a big uptake in the number of people choosing the Cervical Screening Test’s self-collection option, far too many people are still putting it off.

My message is simple. If you’re aged 25 to 74, have a cervix and have ever been sexually active, you’re eligible and should have a test every five years.

The test may be a confronting experience for some, but the alternative is far worse.

Find out more on our new campaign and the importance of cervical screening.
