ECOG-ACRIN Announced the Recipients of the 2024 Scientific Leadership and Mentorship Awards
The ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group (ECOG-ACRIN) announced the recipients of its 2024 Scientific Leadership and Mentorship Awards.
These prestigious awards honor exceptional leaders and mentors who have made significant contributions to cancer research and have played an important role in guiding the next generation of scientists.
This year marks significant breakthroughs in ECOG-ACRIN’s mentoring programs, including the 20th anniversary of the Paul Carbone, MD Fellowship Award and the recognition of the second annual Remarkable Mentor to Women in Oncology Award.
Young Investigator of the Year Award
Dustin A. “Dusty” Deming, MD, is the recipient of our 2024 Young Investigator of the Year Award.
Dr. Deming is an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and a medical oncologist at the UW Carbone Cancer Center, specializing in gastrointestinal cancers such as colorectal and esophageal cancer.
As a survivor of early-age onset rectal cancer, he is deeply committed to developing precision medicine for colon cancer.
Dr. Deming also chairs our Developmental Therapeutics Committee and has received numerous accolades, including multiple listings in Best Doctors in America and the Award of Distinction for Translational Research at the 2014 ECOG-ACRIN Young Investigator Symposium.
Remarkable Mentor to Women in Oncology Award
This year, Heather A. Wakelee, MD, received the 2024 Remarkable Mentor to Women in Oncology Award.
Dr. Heather Wakelee, is the Division Chief for medical oncology and deputy director of the Stanford Cancer Institute. A former Young Investigator of the Year herself, Dr. Wakelee’s leadership extends internationally, having served as president of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, where she championed the career development of women.
Under her guidance, Stanford’s lung cancer program has expanded, and Dr. Wakelee continues to use her position to mentor and advocate for gender equity in oncology.
Paul Carbone, MD Fellowship Award
The 2024 Paul Carbone, MD Fellowship Award was awarded to Tarek H. Mouhieddine.
Tarek H. Mouhieddine, MD, is a hematology and oncology fellow at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Mouhieddine, is researching innovative treatments for multiple myeloma. His project, titled Targeting PD1/Tim3 to Overcome Immunogenic Resistance to Bispecific Antibody in Multiple Myeloma, seeks to improve immunotherapeutic approaches to cancer treatment. Dr. Mouhieddine’s award marks the 20th anniversary of the fellowship, which was established to support early-career investigators in clinical trial design and cancer research excellence.
