Abhishek Shankar: Honored to Chair for the IGCS-IGCAN Cancer Survivors Caregivers Summit
Abhishek Shankar, Associate Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, recently shared on LinkedIn:
“It was an honor to participate as Summit Chair for the IGCS-IGCAN Cancer Survivors Caregivers Summit and an Invited Faculty in the Annual Congress of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society at The Convention Centre Dublin (The CCD), Ireland from 15-18th October 2024.
We started the conference with the IGCS-IGCAN Cancer Survivors Caregivers Summit, and this was a full house. I could not find anyone leaving the room throughout the summit, rather participants were kept on joining. Apart from lectures and panel discussions, we also presented the Dicey Scroggins Distinguished Advocate Award 2024 to all winners. We also invited the EDI grant winner to present their work, and it was heartening to see the exceptional work they all did with the grant.
The summit emphasized comprehensive survivorship care, underlining the importance of tailored resources and psychosocial support for patients post-treatment. This included the development of care frameworks that address survivors’ physical, emotional, and social recovery needs and practical tools for caregivers.
Sessions at the Congress also highlighted advancements in patient-centered care for gynecologic cancer patients, focusing on personalized treatment, immunotherapy advancements, and digital health’s role in improving patient outcomes. Special attention was given to addressing disparities in survivorship care, especially in resource-limited settings, and fostering collaborative approaches to increase HPV vaccination and cancer screening access.
A recurring theme was the value of integrating survivorship planning early in the cancer care continuum, helping to ensure holistic recovery and quality of life improvements. The Congress offered a platform for fostering partnerships across borders, underscoring the need for global strategies to reduce inequities and expand support for survivors and caregivers worldwide.
I also got an opportunity to visit Johnnie Fox’s established in 1978 and to see the beautiful campus of Trinity College Dublin.
Congratulations Rosalind Glasspool, Eva-Maria Strömsholm, Bridget Carr, Mary Eiken, Debbie Leopold, Ashley Johnson Jones, Shriya S. for a successful summit and IGCS annual congress. It was great meeting Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, Ritu Salani, Ted Trimble from NCI, USA, and Dr Nadeem Rustum from MSKCC, USA.”
