Voice of the families: Fekadu and his sister – CANCaRe Africa

“Voice of the Families post 20: Fekadu and his sister.
Please meet Fekadu and his sister Yemarwuha. They are from the Chilga district in the Central Gondar Zone of the Amhara regional state in Ethiopia.
Fekadu lives with his parents and five siblings. Sadly, his father passed away before his diagnosis, leaving his mother to care for the other children at home. This is why his sister accompanies him during his treatment.
Fekadu was diagnosed with blood cancer about three months ago. Since then, the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (UoGCSH) in Gondar, Ethiopia, has been treating him with chemotherapy. They travel approximately three hours to reach the hospital for his treatment. Fekadu’s family are farmers, and the diagnosis and treatment costs initially caused them great distress.
However, after receiving psychological counselling through our psychosocial support group, TAPCCO, and a cash transfer through CANCaRe Africa’s Zero Abandonment from Start to Finish programme, they felt relieved and continued his treatment.
His prognosis is good, and his family is currently happy with the service and financial support they are receiving.
Appropriate consent given.”
