The Cancer Research Institute’s 2024 Annual Awards Gala
The Cancer Research Institute (CRI) hosted its 2024 Annual Awards Gala on Tuesday, October 15, at Cipriani 25 Broadway in New York City’s Financial District, to celebrate the leaders and innovators that are driving life-saving cancer immunotherapy research. CRI paid tribute to its past while boldly looking toward the future of not only the organization, but the field as whole.
A Tribute to a Legacy of Impact and Innovation
Paul Shiverick, co-chairman of the board at CRI, presented the evening’s first honor, the 2024 Oliver R. Grace Award for Distinguished Service in Advancing Cancer Research, to Dr. Jill O’Donnell-Tormey. As the former CEO and director of scientific affairs at CRI, Dr. O’Donnell-Tormey was recognized for her significant contributions to cancer research advocacy, awareness, and fundraising. Accepting the award, Dr. O’Donnell-Tormey expressed her gratitude for her leadership role at CRI.
CRI Honors a Rising STAR
Dr. O’Donnell-Tormey presented the Frederick W. Alt Award for New Discoveries in Immunology to Dr. Andrea Schietinger, principal investigator at the Andrea Schietinger Lab at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a CRI Lloyd J. Old STAR. This award honors former CRI postdoctoral fellows whose research has significantly impacted the field of immunology. Dr. Schietinger graciously acknowledged CRI and her scientific community in her acceptance.
A Legacy of Scientific Excellence in Tumor Immunology
The 2024 William B. Coley Award for Distinguished Research in Basic and Tumor Immunology closed the evening, recognizing researchers whose work has advanced understanding of the immune system’s response to various diseases. Since its inception in 1975, the Coley Award has celebrated some of the world’s most accomplished scientific minds.
This year, the honor was shared by three distinguished scientists:
Dr. Mark Anderson, MD, PhD, director of the Diabetes Center at the University of California, San Francisco.
Dr. Christophe O. Benoist, MD, PhD, Morton Grove-Rasmussen Professor of Immunohematology at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Diane J. Mathis, PhD, Morton Grove-Rasmussen Chair of Immunohematology and professor of Microbiology and Immunobiology at Harvard Medical School.
On this occasion Cancer Research Institute shared on LinkedIn:
