Laura Haskins: Current capacities and needs in cancer control in Nigeria
Laura Haskins, Public Health specialist at International Atomic Energy Agency, shared following post on Linkedin:
”Wrapping up week 1 of 2 in Nigeria, doing an assessment of current capacities and needs in cancer control in the country. This assessment (called an imPACT review) was requested by the Honorable Minister of State of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and is jointly carried out by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the World Health Organization, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
It’s been an absolute pleasure to be here with a team of 12 cancer experts from across the region, as well as colleagues from IAEA and WHO. After months of virtual preparations with the national team of experts, we are getting to witness in-person the work being done in the country.
We’ve talked with national leaders, policymakers, clinicians, advocates and patients. We’ve visited primary health care centres, hospitals and universities in regions across the country. And we’ve participated in numerous community town halls, to ensure we are hearing as many voices as possible.
Initial impressions:
– Grateful for the very warm welcome we’ve received from all of our Nigerian colleagues, in particular the Director General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) Usman Malami Aliyu – our national imPACT review focal point, and his whole team at NICRAT.
– Heartened by the engagement on cancer control expressed by Honorable Minister Tunji Alausa, who I briefed on Monday with the team.
– And inspired by the many leaders, practitioners, advocates and more that we have met, who are focusing their energies on addressing the growing cancer burden in Nigeria.
Looking forward to what’s in store next week, where we’ll continue to deepen our understanding, so that we can deliver evidence-based recommendations on next steps to further strengthen cancer control, tailored to the Nigerian context.”
