Deb Schrag and Lorenz Studer have been elected to the National Academy of Medicine
Dr. Deb Schrag, Chair of the Department of Medicine, and Dr. Lorenz Studer, Director of the Center for Stem Cell Biology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, have been elected to the National Academy of Medicine.
This year, NAM elected 90 regular members and 10 international members during its annual meeting. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
Dr. Deb Schrag is the Chair of the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK), where she leads nearly 500 faculty members in advancing cancer therapies and patient care. A medical oncologist specializing in gastrointestinal cancers, Dr. Schrag is internationally recognized for her research in health services, focusing on improving cancer outcomes and equity. Prior to MSK, she was Chief of Population Sciences at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Lorenz Studer is a leading stem cell biologist known for his groundbreaking work in developing therapies for cancer and degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and ALS. As the head of The Lorenz Studer Lab at MSK, he and his team focus on using human pluripotent stem cells for disease modeling, drug discovery, and cell therapy. Dr. Studer has revolutionized approaches to cell fate, maturation, and aging, particularly in neurodegenerative disease research. He also pioneered a stem cell-based transplantation therapy for Parkinson’s disease and is the founding director of MSK’s Center for Stem Cell Biology.
