“World Mental Health Day: Supporting Patients with Breast Cancer and their Caregivers’ Mental Wellbeing
Today, October 10, is World Mental Health Day.
Mental health and breast cancer are related.
Breast cancer diagnosis can trigger anxiety, depression, and trauma.
Mental health support is crucial for patients, survivors, and loved ones.
The Connection:
Breast cancer treatment affects mental health – The shock of the diagnosis, the challenges faced due to the side effects of the treatment can all lead to depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
Mental wellbeing impacts breast cancer recovery – The emotional turmoil of recurrence, fear of death, strained relationships impacts recovery and recovery period.
Support networks save lives – Support groups can help deal with body image issues and identity crisis after a mastectomy.
Support groups can also help caregivers put an end to emotional exhaustion, stress and burnout as they care for their loved one or patient.
What to do?
Encourage open conversations.
Promote mental health resources.
Support breast cancer research.”
