Christopher Jackson Is Running For The UICC Board of Directors

Christopher Jackson, Professor of Oncology at the University of Otago, is running for the UICC Board of Directors.

This year he’s running among other candidates including Matti Aapro, Tsetsegsaikhan Batmunkh, Stella Aguinaga Bialous, Maira Caleffi, Hana Chaar Choueib, Todd Harper, Purna Kurkure, Dilyara Kaidarova, David Kerr, Eric Bouffet, Gilberto Lopes, Kenji Lopez-Cuevas, Asem Mansour, Miriam Mutebi, Omar Nimri, C S Pramesh, Kathleen Schmeler, and Naoto Ueno.

Chris Jackson is a distinguished medical oncologist and Professor of Cancer Medicine, recognized for his expertise in gastrointestinal cancers and melanoma. With a rich background in oncology, he has established himself as a leading figure in both national and international cancer research and management.

Throughout his career, Chris has held various prominent roles, including serving as the Medical Director of the Cancer Society of New Zealand from 2015 to 2021. In this capacity, he was instrumental in shaping cancer care policies and advocating for improved services and standards for patients. Currently, he is the Clinical Leader for Oncology Research at Dunedin Hospital, where he drives innovative research initiatives and collaborates with other specialists to enhance cancer treatment protocols. His strong ties to cancer trials within New Zealand further highlight his commitment to advancing clinical research and improving outcomes for patients.

In 2011, Chris co-founded Mercy Cancer Care in partnership with Mercy Hospital, with a clear vision that patients should have access to world-class cancer care and the latest treatment options available in their own region. This initiative has made significant strides in providing comprehensive care and support to those facing cancer diagnoses, reinforcing his dedication to the local community.

As a published author, Chris has contributed numerous academic articles and book chapters focusing on gastrointestinal cancers and lymphoma, further solidifying his reputation as a thought leader in oncology. His research interests encompass a wide range of topics, particularly in the fields of gastrointestinal cancers, melanoma, and urological cancers.

Born and raised in Otago, Chris remains deeply committed to the health and wellbeing of his home region. His passion for oncology, combined with his focus on community-centered care, drives his ongoing efforts to ensure that patients receive the best possible treatments and support throughout their cancer journeys.

Education

Chris Jackson graduated from the University of Otago. He undertook further medical training in New Zealand before completing sub-specialist training at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, which is known as the world’s first specialist cancer hospital.
