Daniel Flora: The Most Meaningful Parts of My Practice
Daniel Flora, Medical Director of Oncology Research at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, shared a post on Substack:
“Clinic Notes: Connecting with Patients
One thing that still surprises me is how often patients seem caught off guard when I ask about their life.
I’ll ask how their family is doing, what they enjoy outside of appointments, whether they have pets, or what their routine looked like before their diagnosis.
They sometimes hesitate, as if they were not expecting that kind of question during an oncology visit.
And yet, these are the kinds of conversations that matter most. It should not feel unusual to talk about someone’s actual life in a medical visit, especially in cancer care.
Somewhere along the way, we made the exam room about data and decisions, and not much else. But those early minutes of connection have become one of the most meaningful parts of my practice.”
