Eric Bouffet is a distinguished leader in the field of pediatric neuro-oncology, with a career dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of childhood cancers.

He serves as a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto and holds the prestigious Garron Family Chair in Childhood Cancer Research. As the head of the Neuro-Oncology Section at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, he plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of pediatric cancer care.

Dr. Bouffet is also a Senior Associate Scientist at the SickKids Research Institute, where he conducts groundbreaking research aimed at improving clinical outcomes for children diagnosed with brain tumors.

His extensive experience encompasses significant leadership roles, including his tenure as President of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) from 2016 to 2019, where he worked to foster international collaboration among pediatric oncologists.

He currently serves as the Advocacy Chair for SIOP, focusing on increasing awareness and support for childhood cancer issues globally.

Since 2003, Dr. Bouffet has chaired the Canadian Paediatric Brain Tumour Consortium, working to unite researchers, clinicians, and families to enhance treatment options and support systems for affected children.

He is also an active member of the steering committee of the Children’s Oncology Group’s Brain Tumour Committee, contributing his expertise to national initiatives aimed at improving research and clinical practices.

In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr. Bouffet has a robust editorial presence in the field, serving on various editorial boards, including Pediatric Blood & Cancer and the Journal of Neuro-Oncology. His commitment to education and advocacy is evident in his ongoing contributions to numerous committees and initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges faced by pediatric cancer patients.

Education

Eric Bouffet graduated from medical school at the University of Lyon, France, in 1980. He trained and practiced in Lyon, eventually serving as Head of the Neuro-Oncology Department at the Centre Léon Bérard from 1992 to 1995.

He then worked as a Consultant Pediatric Oncologist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Bristol from 1996 to 1998, followed by the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, UK, from 1998 to 2000.

In 2000, he relocated to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto to establish and lead a multidisciplinary pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program within the Division of Hematology/Oncology. In 2011, he was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Garron Family Chair in Childhood Cancer Research.
