Miriam Mutebi: WCC 2024 is a convergence of 2,000 cancer experts from around the world

”It’s been a couple of awake hours since my arrival in Geneva for the UICC World Cancer Congress that begins tomorrow, the 17th up to the 19th.

Fun fact: The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) is the only global cancer organization covering all cancers across the cancer care continuum (prevention, early detection, treatment and care, and palliative care). I find myself reflecting on the significance of this gathering and the profound impact it will have on the global fight against cancer.

WCC 2024 is a convergence of 2,000 cancer experts from around the world, including influential health leaders, government officials, civil society representatives, policymakers, and members of the private sector. Together, we are united by a shared commitment to improving the lives of those affected by cancer and exchanging best practices in cancer control. What makes it particularly special is its timing.

September is a month dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of cancer research, early detection, and the ongoing challenges faced by patients and healthcare providers.

The Congress plays its core role of convening and uniting cancer and (Non Communicable Diseases) NCD communities, driving progress in reducing the global burden of cancer through the power of knowledge sharing and collective action. It also offers an opportunity to bring Africa’s voice to the forefront, ensuring that the needs of our patients and healthcare systems are not only heard but addressed.

As president of AORTIC- Africa and a board member of UICC, I look forward to participating in the global dialogue. I have several speaking and panel sessions that I’m eager to dive into, where I hope to share the unique opportunities for cancer care control in Africa.

Some of the key topics include:

Funding, Technology, and Business Models: Exploring innovative financial and technological solutions.

Advancing Equity: Addressing the needs of refugees, displaced people, and underprivileged communities.

Success Stories and Storytelling: Showcasing effective cancer control strategies and the power of personal narratives.

UICC Regional Meeting – Africa: Focusing on Africa’s specific cancer care challenges and opportunities.

Breast Cancer Treatment: Advancing care in resource-limited settings.

Another compelling aspect this year is the launch of a documentary project particularly close to my heart. In collaboration with the BBC Story works, we have been working on a patient journey documentary that captures the stories of cancer patients across Africa, and their families’ resilience, courage, and hope. It highlights the stark realities they face, from diagnosis to treatment, and the incredible strength they muster daily. It is also a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.

Miriam Mutebi is a Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. She is the President of the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), and past president for Kenya Society of Hematology and Oncology (KESHO) and on the Board of Directors of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).

She is the co-founder of the Pan African Women’s Association of Surgeons and is part of the Kenya Association of Women Surgeons. She is an avid supporter for the education and support for women, especially in surgery and she aims to provide mentorship for women in surgery and to improve women’s health and surgical care in Africa. She is currently pursuing a pilot’s license in order to extend breast care services to marginalized areas.
