Rashid Lui: Implementing intestinal microbiota transplantation service lifesaving treatment for patients with C. difficile infection
Rashid Lui, Clinical assistant professor and a specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Happy to share our team’s experience in implementing a new intestinal microbiota transplantation service for the public sector, a for patients with difficult to treat C. difficile infections, at the International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare lifesaving treatment
My takeaways from spearheading this initiative:
- The sky is the limit. There are opportunities abound, especially for clinical services that have an immediate and substantial impact on patient outcomes, one just needs to seize it
- Clear objective and vision on the final outcome. We wanted to be able to provide this lifesaving treatment to the citizens of Hong Kong, and worked methodically to achieving this
- A showcase of close and successful collaboration between Hospital Authority and CUHK Medicine and engaging various stakeholders. Really have to thank Francis Chan, Siew Ng, Vincent Wong, Margaret Ip,Rita Ng, Ka Hin Lau, Jeffrey LAI, Kai Ming Chow and many many more
- Patience and perseverance. From our first pilot case of FMT in 2013, till the formal introduction of HA’s service last year in 2023, everything that is good and worthy takes time
- ‘All disease begins in the gut’ – Hippocrates. We are just scratching the surface with regard to the link between many unexplainable, chronic diseases and gut dysbiosis. Gut microbiota modulation for other conditions may be possible in the near future to help even more patients
Lots of hard work but definitely worth it, especially for our patients and relatives!”
