Highlights from KCancer by the Jimmy Fund
The Jimmy Fund, founded in Boston in 1948, consists of community-driven fundraising events and programs dedicated entirely to supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s mission of delivering exceptional patient care and pioneering cancer research for both children and adults.
It is the official charity of the Boston Red Sox, the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, the Pan-Mass Challenge, and the Variety Children’s Charity of New England, and benefits from numerous events nationwide.
The hashtag KCancer is central to a campaign led by the Jimmy Fund, which supports cancer research and patient care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The campaign urges people to use the hashtag on social media to back the fight against cancer, particularly during events like the annual WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon.
This telethon, in partnership with the Boston Red Sox, raises substantial funds for cancer research and treatment. In 2023, the event raised over $3.9 million. The hashtag amplifies awareness and encourages public participation in these fundraising efforts.
Here are some highlights from the event, shared on Social Media:
” ‘The Jimmy Fund is Calista’s safe place in such a scary time. It’s not easy, but we’re doing it together.’ – Jennifer, Calista’s mom.
Calista is looking forward to finishing treatment and getting back in the net this winter!
KCANCER for patients like Calista.”
” ‘Kidney cancer is an example of how years ago, we were told the chance of survival would be less than a year. Now, the median survival rate is over 5 years—with stage IV.’ – Toni Choueiri.
We need your support to increase survival rates even more!”
Toni Choueiri, Director of the Lank Center for Genitourinary (GU) Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute:
“Thank you The Jimmy Fund for having us visit Fenway Park, Red Sox to talk about Kidney Cancer advances!”
“Let’s welcome our Jimmy Fund Captain, Red Sox’s Garrett Whitlock!
‘Whenever I leave the Jimmy Fund Clinic, I realize I’ve been smiling for hours visiting with the kids. You can’t help but leave with a sense of joy.’ – Garrett.”
Vinayak Venkataraman, Sarcoma Medical Oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute:
“Thanks WEEI and The Jimmy Fund for hosting me and my incredible patient, Ryan, who’s inspired my team and me with his grit and fun-loving spirit as he faces a rare sarcoma dsrct. He shared his story live to make things better for others.”
Wow! We’ve raised an incredible $3.7M to KCANCER over the last two days.
There’s still time to give! Help us reach $4M to benefit cancer care and research at Dana-Farber.”
