Megan-Claire Chase: Teaching students of color what I wish I was taught
Megan-Claire Chase, A Patient Advocate, shared on LinkedIn:
“What a great memory that popped up from two years ago yesterday. I have always loved mentoring teens and young adults of color. No one teaches Black students and students of color in high school or college…
how to handle and process microaggressions and recognize when one occurs
how to speak up when you are the only one in the room or on Zoom who looks like you
how to learn ways to compartmentalize the hurt and anger you will feel towards certain colleagues when no one speaks up for you IN the moment
(them sending a private DM does NOT count)
how to document the way you are being treated by wh.ite colleagues because you will always have to be the one to prove the wrongdoing against you
how to walk into a room with confidence feeling empowered and have a firm handshake
how to make sure people say your name correctly EVERY single time
I didn’t have someone like me in those early years. I share my many nuggets of wisdom I’ve painfully learned (and still learning) along the way.”
