Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: We call on all governments to prioritize testing, treatment and vaccination for hepatitis

July 28 is World Hepatitis Day. Chronic hepatitis B and C are significant risk factors for liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Persistent infection leads to liver damage, fibrosis, and cirrhosis, creating a conducive environment for the development of cancer. Vaccines are available to prevent hepatitis A and B infections. Hepatitis vaccines are widely available and recommended globally.

On this occasion, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared on his X:

A liver performs over 500 vital functions every single day to keep us alive, that’s why testing, treating and preventing viral hepatitis is so important. On World Hepatitis Day, we call on all governments to prioritize testing, treatment and vaccination to realize a hepatitis-free world by 2030.”
