His impact on the field, his dedication to patients, and his commitment to medical education leave an enduring legacy.
At the time of his passing, Professor Scambia was serving as Chair of the Board of Directors of the European Society for Gynecological Endoscopy (ESGE), a position he assumed in 2024. Prior to this, he led the ESGE as its President from 2020 to 2022, guiding advancements in gynecological endoscopy and fostering international collaboration.
A Lifelong Commitment to Medicine
Born in Catanzaro on December 24, 1959, Professor Scambia devoted his life to medicine. He graduated with the highest honors in Medicine and Surgery from the Catholic University in 1983 and specialized in Gynecology and Obstetrics in 1987. His career was closely tied to the Gemelli University Hospital and the Catholic University, where he became a leading figure in gynecological surgery and oncology.
Contributions to Oncology and Research
His contributions to the medical community were vast. He was a key member of the executive board of MITO (Multicenter Italian Trials in Ovarian Cancer), contributing significantly to oncological research. He also played a crucial role in the Women’s Cancer Commission of FIGO and the National Health Council, where he worked to advance women’s healthcare policies and research.
His contributions were recognized with numerous accolades, including his appointment as a Knight of the Italian Republic in 2017. His work in regenerative medicine research and leadership in the Steering Committee of the CROME Centre further demonstrated his passion for advancing medical science.
International Recognition and Influence
Internationally, Professor Scambia was a respected figure in global medical circles. He was actively involved in international organizations, including the Italian Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the International Gynecological Cancer Society, the European Society of Gynecologic Oncology, and the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM).
A Passion for Education and Mentorship
Education and mentorship were at the heart of his work. He founded the “Catholic Laparoscopy Advances Surgery School,” training countless medical professionals in advanced surgical techniques. His influence shaped the future of gynecological oncology, and he was deeply respected by his colleagues and students.
Flavia Giacomini, a mentee, and colleague, shared a sentiment that encapsulated Professor Scambia’s impact on those around him:
“Giovanni Scambia was the surgeon, the mentor, the leader who never once said ‘no’—not because it was easy, but because he taught us how to earn every ‘yes’. A guiding light, a true inspiration. His legacy will live on in all of us. We are grateful for every lesson he shared and every opportunity he gave. He will be deeply missed.”
In one of his final messages, he encouraged young doctors to embrace innovation:
“Marvel at the progress and achievements. When I started, I never imagined telling a woman with cancer that she could have a child after recovery, or that artificial intelligence could help predict treatment outcomes. I hope you witness many more discoveries and victories.”
Reflections from Colleagues and Mentees
The passing of Professor Scambia has deeply saddened many who had the honor of working alongside him.
Giuseppe Curigliano, in a heartfelt tribute, shared, “We mourn the untimely passing of Giovanni Scambia, a visionary leader in European gynecologic oncology. His pioneering contributions, dedication to patient care, and commitment to advancing research have left an indelible mark. His legacy will continue to inspire generations.”
Stefano Cacciatore, a colleague of Professor Scambia, expressed his profound loss: “The passing of Professor Giovanni Scambia deeply saddens me. Though my interactions with him were brief, during lectures, internships, passing by in the hallways, or accompanying loved ones to his visits, his immense presence was always palpable. He was a pillar of an institution and a community, the great family of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, which I first joined as a student ten years ago. Since then, I have contributed to its educational and healthcare mission, growing within an environment shaped by the values he so perfectly embodied.”
“Truly saddened to hear about Prof Scambia’s passing. It was a real privilege to meet him at the ESGE – European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy in Marseille in Oct 2025, where he moderated the CMR Surgical symposium on CMR Surgical – Versius Robotic System surgery in Urogynaecology and Gynaecological oncology where I was an invited speaker. His knowledge, expertise, and kindness shone through in every interaction—with both speakers and delegates alike. A true leader in the field, whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our profession. His passing is an enormous loss. Rest in peace, Prof. Scambia. Your legacy will live on,” said Ivilina Pandeva, a respected colleague.
Vincenzo Tarantino also reflected on the personal impact of Professor Scambia, saying, “A friend remarked: ‘The way you mourn him shows he was more than just your Boss.’ Thank you, Professor Scambia, for the opportunity to work with and learn from you. You were an inspiration to us all, leading in everything you did—right until the very end.”
A Lasting Legacy
Professor Giovanni Scambia will be remembered not just for his brilliance and contributions to medicine but also for his kindness, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to improving the lives of women worldwide. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations in the medical field, ensuring that his pioneering spirit lives on.
