I wanted to share my experience as a patient from oncology pharmacist’s perspective – Sara Kim

My memoir on my recent medical journey is published on amazon! It is self-published and far from being perfect but hoping that my messages were clearly conveyed, experience of becoming and being a patient was shared & acknowledged those who helped me get through the journey.
So here’s my story. About a year ago (3/2/2022), I underwent a major open abdomen surgery for cancer diagnosis (presumed cholangiocarcinoma) for resection and reconstruction of bile system.  My case was a challenging case, and the diagnosis was made after months of multiple imaging tests (CT/MRI/PET scan), procedures (bile duct stent placement x 3), and seeing 6 different MDs, including 2 surgeons and an oncologist.

Words cannot describe how grateful I am for being cared for by my amazing surgeon and oncologist and for their top-notch care and compassion!
I thank Lord for giving me an opportunity to appreciate life, advocate for cancer patients, and to be able to share my experience as being on the other side. Seeing my 10-inch scar on my abdomen every morning reminds me of the dark times I’d gone through and how thankful I am for being able to stand where I am now.
Through my memoir, I wanted to share my experience as a patient from oncology pharmacist’s perspective, increase awareness of cancer, and to send few messages.
The word “cancer” is much more DESTRUCTIVE to patients than one can ever imagine so please be patient with and empathetic towards cancer patients.  Give them time to process the earth-shattering news because once they hear the word “cancer”, all the info that comes afterward is really hard to follow.
I was so fortunate enough to have a loving family, friends and caring colleagues who supported me through this journey.
–>My heartfelt THANK YOU to my surgeon (Matthew Weiss, MD) & my oncologist (Anna Levy, MD)!
–>THANK YOU to all my healthcare heroes!
–>Treasure every moment spent with your family and friends because there might not be a next time.
–>Most of the illnesses are triggered by stress. Practice self-care daily, and take a good care of yourself.
–>Be kind to others. We don’t know what kind of battle others are fighting in their lives…
