Weill Cornell Medicine shared on LinkedIn:

“While growing up in Puerto Rico, Dr. Andrea Cabassa found tremendous joy in caring for her younger siblings.

‘My mom tells me stories about how I liked helping with my brother and sister, and I know that influenced me wanting to find a profession where I could take care of both children and their families’

– says Dr. Cabassa, who is now a pediatrician at Weill Cornell Medicine.

When Dr. Cabassa was eight years old, the family moved from Puerto Rico to Florida, where her mother sought a Spanish-speaking pediatrician to feel a sense of comfort and belonging when taking her children to the doctor.

That pediatrician, Dr. B, became a role model for Dr. Cabassa.

As a teen, she volunteered at the practice, and ‘I loved being in the office and seeing her connect with families by making them feel heard and understood’, she recalls.

Inspired by those experiences, Dr. Cabassa came to Weill Cornell Medicine determined to make a difference.

While she was a medical student here, she helped create a medical Spanish course aimed at helping students develop the language skills and cultural understanding needed to better communicate with Spanish-speaking patients.

‘Weill Cornell became a place where I could bring together my identity and continue to grow my passion for pediatrics’

– she notes.

After graduating in 2023, Dr. Cabassa remained committed to community health education, and during her residency, she organized Spanish-language pediatric workshops for families in East Harlem.

Her journey in medicine returned to Weill Cornell in 2026, when she was offered a position on the physician team at a Weill Cornell Medicine primary care practice in Brooklyn Heights.

‘I love getting to know my patients and their families over time and watching them grow, from their first visits as newborns through all the milestones that follow’

– she says.

‘It’s incredibly rewarding to build those lasting relationships and be the person families can turn to for guidance and support throughout their child’s development.’ “
