“Today marks the launch of The Lancet Oncology Commission on Cancer Genomics and Precision Oncology, the culmination of a global effort involving 56 Commissioners from 21 countries and 48 stakeholder organisations, including patients, clinicians, researchers, policymakers, regulators, and global health partners.
The main Commission paper is supported by 18 complementary peer-reviewed publications in the The Lancet Group journals.
Our work was guided by a fundamental question:
How can health systems translate molecular innovation into meaningful patient benefit?
At scale. Equitably. Sustainably.
To answer this question, we assessed the global precision oncology landscape and analysed the key challenges shaping research, real-world delivery and impact.
Our findings highlight persistent inequities in access, evidence generation, and delivery, alongside growing pressures on health systems.
In response, we developed evidence-based frameworks, implementation tools, and actionable recommendations to support Member States and health systems in advancing precision oncology in line with the ambition of the World Health Assembly Resolution on Precision Medicine.
Publication is not the endpoint. It is a call for collective action. The evidence has been assembled. The frameworks have been developed. The recommendations have been made.
The task now is implementation: embedding cancer genomics and precision oncology within health systems in ways that are equitable, evidence-informed, sustainable, and aligned with national priorities and patient needs.
