Oliver Bogler: NIH Awards Decline as Funding Stays Near Normal Levels

Oliver Bogler, CEO of the Night Science Institute, shared on LinkedIn:

“New edition of Grant and Growth is out.

NIH ended fiscal year 2026 having issued fewer grants than at the same point in any of the past six years, while total spending stayed close to normal. Same money, fewer awards.

In the Note I look at why I think multiyear funding is being pushed so hard the administration and what that may mean to biomedical research in the coming years.

Also in this edition: the White House steps back from a board to approve NIH grants, and a reminder that comments on NIH’s proposal to stop reporting peer review scores close October 13.”
