Michelle Mitchell: A Legacy That Continues to Drive Progress in Bowel Cancer Research

Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive at Cancer Research UK, shared on LinkedIn:

“It was wonderful to be part of the celebrations to mark what would have been Dame Deborah James’ 45th birthday at the inaugural The Rebel Ball fundraiser last night.

When Deborah called me and asked if we could create the Bowelbabe Fund, I felt privileged that she trusted Cancer Research UK (CRUK) to help carry her vision forward.

Just over four years later and Deborah’s amazing legacy has already helped to fund 16 research projects. With the Funds support, researchers are improving how we detect bowel cancer, developing better treatments with fewer side effects and exploring exciting new approaches, including vaccines.

I’m so very grateful to her family who have continued her mission with incredible dedication, generosity and love, supporting the ongoing work of the Fund every step of the way and playing a huge role in organising The Rebel Ball, which I’m delighted to announce raised a brilliant £316,315 in total.

Deborah never believed in standing still when there was more to do, and this work is more important than ever. Bowel cancer remains the second biggest cause of cancer death in the UK, with more than 48,000 people diagnosed each year.

Every pound raised will help ensure her extraordinary legacy continues to drive progress and bring hope to people affected by cancer.”
