Editorial | Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month – beyond the oncologic diagnosis
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, drawing attention to a malignancy that continues to carry a substantial global burden and for which effective population screening remains unavailable.
From a cardio-oncology perspective, however, the conversation should not end with cancer detection and treatment.
Emerging data suggest that cardiovascular risk may also become part of the ovarian cancer journey – not through one uniform form of ‘cardiotoxicity,’ but through the interaction of the malignancy, baseline cardiovascular health, surgical menopause, thrombosis, and treatment-specific effects.
This distinction matters. Bevacizumab may bring hypertension and vascular risk to the foreground; other therapies raise different cardiovascular considerations; and some patients may already carry substantial risk before anticancer therapy begins.
The implication is therefore not more testing for everyone, but more thoughtful, risk-adapted cardiovascular care.
Cardio-oncology can add value by recognizing the phenotype that matters for each patient – whether vascular, thrombotic, hemodynamic, or myocardial – and by using information already available from routine cancer care, including imaging, when it can refine cardiovascular risk.
