HCRI Rwanda Joins Rusizi District in Community Health Education During Umuganda

Today, Internal Health, Cancer and Research Initiative (IHCRI Rwanda), in collaboration with Rusizi District, participated in a district-level Umuganda held in Gikundamvura Sector, bringing together community members, local leaders, and security officials in a strong demonstration of collective action and community development.

The Umuganda was marked by a high level of participation, including the Mayor of Rusizi District, Sindayiheba Phanuel, the leadership of the Rwanda National Police and Rwanda Defense Force in Rusizi District, community leaders, citizens, and the Executive Director of IHCRI Rwanda Niyobuhungiro Elysee.

Following the Umuganda, participants gathered for discussions on leadership, community development, security, and other matters of importance to the community.

During this gathering, the Executive Director of IHCRI Rwanda was also given the opportunity to deliver a health education session on the harmful effects of alcohol consumption on the liver, one of the body’s most essential organs.

The session highlighted how harmful alcohol consumption can progressively damage the liver and contribute to serious health conditions, including liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.

In his remarks, Mayor Sindayiheba Phanuel commended the initiative and emphasized the importance of complementing the efforts of policymakers with expert-led, evidence-based health education to ensure that communities receive accurate and practical health information.

The citizens actively engaged in the discussion, demonstrated an increased understanding of the health consequences of harmful alcohol consumption, and expressed their commitment to sharing the message with their families, friends, and colleagues.

In closing, the Mayor welcomed IHCRI Rwanda to continue participating in future community activities aimed at promoting health education and empowering Rwandan communities with knowledge.

Healthy communities begin with informed communities.”
