The Institute of Cancer Research – ICR shared Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre’s post, adding:
“This expanding partnership is strategically significant, broadening the depth and diversity of research disciplines we can apply to cancer challenges and enabling our research to involve even larger, more diverse patient populations across London and the South East.
Dr. Barbara Pittam, our Chief Research and Academic Officer, attended the Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre meeting this week on behalf of the ICR.
Celebrating the expansion, Dr. Pittam said:
‘The expansion of the Academic Health Science Centre is building the critical mass needed to make faster progress on some of the most important challenges in cancer research and treatment.
It will strengthen our established collaborations with Imperial College London, such as The Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research Unit (CEPRU) and the CRUK Convergence Science Centre, while creating new opportunities around major strategic priorities such as AI in oncology.
By bringing together complementary strengths across academia, specialist and acute healthcare, and primary care, the partnership will help us develop ambitious research at scale and ensure our discoveries benefit wider and more diverse patient populations even faster.
‘The ICR is proud to be contributing our distinctive expertise in the discovery and development of new cancer tests and treatments, while working closely with others to achieve more than any one organisation could alone.’ “
Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre shared:
“Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre expansion.
Partnership will accelerate health, research and innovation in West London.
Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre is expanding its partnership, welcoming The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London North West Healthcare NHS Trust and Brunel University of London as new members.
This expansion brings together the largest NHS provider collaborative in England, the NWL Acute Provider Group, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and some of the world’s leading research organisations.
By connecting academic and NHS organisations across 14 hospitals and ~2800 academic staff, the expanded partnership will strengthen translation of discovery science into better health outcomes.
This health sciences ecosystem serves a diverse and ethnically rich population of 2.7m people with access to world class research facilities, resources and talent enabling development and evaluation of health innovations at pace and scale.
Professor Mark Thursz, AHSC Director, said:
‘Expansion will accelerate the real-world health impacts of our research and education mission and better address health inequalities, by strengthening our translational research ecosystem and extending our support for the workforce of the future. We can now harness biomedical and clinical capability, from across the sector to deliver system-wide benefits in our focus areas of digital health and AI, early diagnosis and disease prevention’.
Leaders from the eight member organisations came together earlier this week, with the new AHSC Chair, Imperial President, Professor Hugh Brady, to agree priorities for the expanded partnership and set out a new and ambitious vision from 2027.”
