“Early detection saves lives. And the difference can be dramatic.
- Breast cancer: over 90% five-year survival at Stage I vs 20–30% at Stage IV
- Lung cancer: over 60% when localised vs less than 10% when spread
- Prostate cancer: over 95% when localised vs around 30% when metastatic
This EU Screening Week we say it loud and proud: screening should not be a luxury – but a right.
WHO’s European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies recommends EU countries modernise population-based cancer screening by:
- Deploying key innovations such as self-sampling, risk-stratified screening and AI-assisted image reading
- Moving towards organised and more risk-based screening
- Investing in health-professional training, strong data infrastructure, public communication and robust evaluation
