Europa Donna – The European Breast Cancer Coalition shared on LinkedIn:
“World Dense Breast Day, 30 September. Do you know your breast density?
Breast density matters. Dense breast tissue is a recognised risk factor for breast cancer and it can also make cancers more difficult to detect on a mammogram.
Yet, many women may not know whether they have dense breasts nor are they aware of what implications density has on the effectiveness of conventional screening programmes.
Women have the right to know their breast density. Being informed gives women the opportunity to understand their individual risk, discuss their screening options with healthcare professionals and make informed decisions about their own breast health.
European breast cancer screening guidelines already recognise that one size does not fit all. The European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer (ECIBC) provides specific recommendations for women with high mammographic breast density, including tailored screening approaches using digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT).
At Europa Donna, we advocate for personalised, risk-stratified breast cancer screening, where women are informed and empowered to participate in decisions about their health. This World Dense Breast Day, we share these key messages:
- Know your breast density,
- Understand what it means,
- Discuss your individual risk and screening options,
- Make an informed decision about your breast health.
Information empowers women. Every woman should have access to the information she needs to make informed choices about her own health.”
