“Global standards exist for almost every step of cancer care.
Turning them into better care for patients in a city hospital is a much harder task, and no single organisation can do it alone.
That challenge was at the centre of our Technical Partners Meeting, held on the margins of the World Cancer Congress 2026.
The closed-door session brought together international technical organisations, academic institutions, professional societies and civil society partners to align their expertise with priorities that cities have identified for themselves.
Opening the session, Alfredo Polo, Director of Technical Cooperation and Capacity Development at C/Can, described C/Can as an implementation platform and matchmaking engine.
Cities define where their health systems need support. C/Can connects those priorities with the right technical partners and provides the coordination and project management to turn global standards, guidelines and specialised clinical skills into locally owned, sustainable interventions.
Local institutions lead the change, which is what makes it last.
Then Ko Aung, Senior Manager, Technical Cooperation at C/Can, then showed what this looks like on the ground, illustrating what a strong partnership between local technical experts and implementation specialists can achieve together.
- In Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 17 technical partners have contributed across 12 projects. Their support has helped shape the National Cancer Control Plan 2025–2030 and a Breast Cancer Action Plan aligned with the WHO Global Breast Cancer Initiative. It has also expanded palliative care services and produced standardised operational guidelines for multidisciplinary teams.
- In Nairobi, Kenya, technical partners are contributing to 11 city projects, from strengthening the quality of diagnosis and treatment to building the capacity of civil society organisations.”
