Alejandra Mendez: PAHO Launches Regional Childhood Cancer Observatory

Alejandra Mendez, Vice President of Childhood Cancer International, shared on LinkedIn:

“Pan American Health Organization has launched a new Regional Childhood Cancer Observatory, bringing together standardized, country-validated information from 24 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

It covers timely diagnosis, health-system capacity, cancer-registry availability and coverage, comprehensive care, and outcomes.

This is more than a new dashboard. It creates a common regional framework for identifying where childhood-cancer systems are failing and comparing progress between countries.

PAHO estimates around 30,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed annually in Latin America and the Caribbean and nearly 10,000 die, while survival across the region ranges from roughly 35% to 80%.

Childhood Cancer International – LATAM participated in the development of the Observatory, alongside PAHO, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital , World Health Organization, International Society of Paediatric Oncology – SIOP , Sociedad Latinoamericana de Oncología Pediátrica (SLAOP), and other regional partners. The initial Andean work was supported by My Child Matters/ Sanofi Foundation.

Advocacy becomes much stronger when we can move from ‘there are inequalities’ to showing governments exactly where their system is underperforming and tracking whether it improves.”
