The names of the candidates running for the ESMO Presidency 2027-2028 have been announced

The names of the candidates running for the ESMO Presidency 2027-2028 have been announced. Find out more about the candidates here.

The candidates have been carefully selected by the Nomination Committee and will be appointed by an Electronic Ballot Vote. The candidates are Giuseppe Curigliano and Nadia Harbeck.

The Electronic Ballot Vote will open on Tuesday, 28 May 2024 at 12:00 (noon) CEST (Central European Summer Time) and close on Monday, 10 June 2024 12:00 (noon) CEST. .

ESMO Full Members who satisfy the eligibility criteria have the right to vote in the elections. Each member has one vote for the ESMO President 2027-2028, or may also select to abstain.

Giuseppe Curigliano

Giuseppe Curigliano, MD, PhD, is the Director of the Early Drug Development Division and co-chairs the Experimental Therapeutics Program at the European Institute of Oncology.

He is a member of the Department of Oncology and Hemato-Oncology’s steering committee at the University of Milan and serves on the Italian National Health Council, advising the Ministry of Health on cancer policy issues.

Dr. Curigliano has international experience, having worked at Columbia University’s Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York and as a visiting scholar at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School in Boston. He co-directed the Division of Medical Oncology at the European Institute of Oncology until 2014.

Within the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), he has held several key roles, including Chair of the ESMO Nomination Committee (2018-2021) and Chair of the ESMO Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee (2020-2023).

He was instrumental in founding the ESMO Breast Cancer Congress and helped launch the ESMO Living Guidelines and the Fellow of ESMO (FESMO) recognition. Additionally, he has organized and participated in numerous professional and educational programs for oncologists worldwide.

Recognized as one of the world’s most influential researchers by Clarivate™ in 2022 and 2023, Professor Curigliano serves on the editorial boards of several international oncology journals, including the European Journal of Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Annals of Oncology. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of ESMO Open.

Nadia Harbeck

Nadia Harbeck, MD, PhD, is the director of the Breast Center and holds the Chair for Conservative Oncology at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, LMU University Hospital in Munich, Germany.

She also leads the Oncological Therapy and Clinical Trials Unit and the Center for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer at the same institution.  Additionally, she serves on the Steering Committee of the Munich Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCCMunich LMU) and was a member of the IRB of the LMU Medical Faculty from 2016 to 2022.

Professor Harbeck has been the ESMO Director of Education since 2023, the Subject Editor for Breast Cancer for the ESMO Guidelines since 2021, and a member of the ESMO Breast Cancer Faculty since 2017.

As a principal investigator or steering committee member of numerous breast cancer trials, Professor Harbeck focuses on novel targeted compounds and individualized treatment strategies. She co-directs the West German Study Group.

Her translational research is centered on prognostic and predictive factors in breast cancer and other malignancies. With a strong interest in eHealth, she co-developed CANKADO, an international digital patient diary.

Professor Harbeck is among the most frequently cited clinical researchers globally, recognized as a highly cited researcher from 2021 to 2023. She is the Founding Editor of Breast Care (Karger Publishers) and serves on the editorial boards of several international oncology journals.

Currently, she is the ESMO Course Director for the Methods in Clinical Cancer Research (MCCR) Workshop (AACR-EORTC-ESMO), a role she has held since 2017, starting as director-elect.
