Vincent Rajkumar: A 15-Year Marathon from Protocol to Paper in Multiple Myeloma

Vincent Rajkumar, Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, shared on X:

Just out! In NEJM – Our randomized trial in myeloma (ENDURANCE trial) shows limited duration of lenalidomide maintenance is just as good as indefinite therapy, with less side effects!

Implications are HUGE. This is a drug we spends billions on each year:

  • Less side effects
  • Less second cancers
  • Similar overall survival
  • Less cost

National NCI funded trial led by EGOG and joined by Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and SWOG.

How long from protocol to paper? This one is 15 years. RCTs especially IITs are hard work. Shaji Kumar pulled it off through unbelievable hard work.

To which Saurabh Zanwar, Assistant Professor at Mayo Clinic, added:

“This is the hardest part for me to wrap my head around. From protocol to this publication, this study took 15 years!

In that time, I:

  • Completed IM residency in India
  • Finished Hem/Onc fellowship and advanced year, Tata Memorial Hospital
  • Moved to the US for research with mSMART Myelom
  • Re-trained in IM Mayo Clinic Internal Medicine Residency Rochester and Hem/Onc Mayo Clinic Hematology-Oncology Fellowship
  • Completed an advanced dysproteinemia fellowship
  • Finished my first year on staff at Mayo.

IITs are true marathons. Huge respect to Shaji Kumar, Vincent Rajkumar, and everyone who had the vision and perseverance to see this through.”
