Tricia Hernandez: FDA Approval of Orca-T Brings New Hope for Stem Cell Transplant Survivors

Tricia Hernandez, Director, Community Engagement at Blood Cancer United, shared on LinkedIn by Blood Cancer United, adding:

“This is amazing news. Chronic graft versus host disease can impact every aspect of life for survivors following allogeneic stem cell transplant. Finding ways to make surviving more like thriving can be life changing.”

Quoting Blood Cancer United’s post:

“The FDA approved Orca-T, a new cell therapy designed to improve outcomes after a matched donor stem cell transplant.

It’s built using your matched donor’s cells, designed to improve outcomes while easing side effects.

Orca-T is for adults with blood cancers like acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and myelodysplastic syndrome who are undergoing a matched donor stem cell transplant.

Almost 80% of those who received the study drug were living without chronic graft-versus-host disease versus 38% who had a conventional transplant. Orca-T was also linked to fewer infections after transplant.

Care that lowers the risk of long-term side effects can make a real difference in what comes after treatment.
