Sonia Pernas: CDK7 Inhibition in Advanced Breast Cancer

Sonia Pernas, Head of Breast Cancer Unit at Catalan Institute of Oncology, shared on LinkedIn about a recent paper she co-authored with colleagues:

“I’m delighted to share the publication of the SUMIT-BC phase II randomized trial in Nature Communications, where I had the privilege of serving as first author!

This is the first randomized trial evaluating the oral CDK7 inhibitor samuraciclib plus fulvestrant in patients with HR+/HER2− advanced breast cancer following progression on CDK4/6 inhibitors.

Key findings

  • Improved clinical benefit with samuraciclib plus fulvestrant compared with fulvestrant alone.
  • Particularly encouraging results in patients with TP53 wild-type tumors, with a median progression-free survival of 14.5 vs. 6.8 months (samuraciclib 360 mg + fulvestrant vs. fulvestrant alone).
  • These findings support further investigation of CDK7 inhibition as a potential treatment strategy in this setting.

Although these results need confirmation in larger trials, they represent a promising step toward more personalized treatment approaches.

I’m especially proud of the contribution of our team at Institut Català d’Oncologia (ICO), Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute – IDIBELL which was the top-recruiting site in this international study involving 26 centers across five countries.

A huge thank you to all the patients and their families, investigators, the entire clinical research team and Carrick Therapeutics who made this study possible!”
