”Congratulations to Sam Humphries, who has received funding through the 2026 Cancer Detection and Therapy Research Program HMRI EMCR Pilot Funding Scheme!

This scheme supports emerging researchers within the CDT Program to develop their research capacity, generate preliminary data and advance innovative projects with the potential to improve cancer detection, treatment and patient outcomes.

Project title: Targeting Glioblastoma using Advanced 3D Tumour Models

About the project:

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive form of malignant brain tumour in adults, with current therapies only providing a median survival of around 15 months, and 5-year survival below 10%. Emerging evidence indicates that GBM cells exploit specific growth factor signalling pathways to promote survival and treatment resistance. This project aims to determine whether inhibition of growth factor signalling can enhance the effectiveness of standard therapy in GBM and reduce the risk for disease recurrence. This would lead the way to a first targeted therapy in GBM.
