Partha Basu, Head of the Early Detection, Prevention and Infections Branch at International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), shared on LinkedIn:
“Breast cancer treatment depends on accurate assessment of ER, PR, HER2, and Ki-67, yet access to immunohistochemistry remains limited in many low-resource settings.
Our recently published study from IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization evaluated the GeneXpert STRAT4 assay on core biopsies and cytology samples from 178 women with breast cancer. We observed strong agreement with conventional IHC for ER detection and substantial agreement for HER2 detection even on FNA samples, demonstrating the promise of an automated molecular approach that can leverage existing GeneXpert infrastructure.
Expanding access to reliable biomarker testing is an important step toward reducing global disparities in cancer care and contribute to achieving the 60-60-80 target of the WHO’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative.”
