New UK research puts a figure on what preventing them could mean.
Researchers at Pfizer’s health economics team and Dr Shobhit Baijal at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust modelled NHS costs of managing ALK-positive advanced NSCLC, with and without brain metastases, using data from four major trials. Published in Lung Cancer Management.
- First-year NHS cost with brain metastases: £14,870 per person
- Without brain metastases: £4,133
- Savings linked to lorlatinib (lower brain metastasis rates in trials) grew over time
From a patient perspective, this isn’t really about pounds and pence – brain metastases carry a real quality-of-life cost alongside the clinical risk.
Health systems need to look at the full picture.”
