Omer Aziz: New Insights into Outcomes and Classification of Appendiceal Goblet Cell Adenocarcinoma

Omer Aziz, Clinical Lead for the Peritoneal Tumour Service at The Christie CPOC, shared on LinkedIn:

Appendiceal goblet cell adenocarcinoma is rare, spreads to the peritoneum, and until now the evidence base has been thin.

Our new study in ESMO Open (210 patients, 1993–2021, incl. 135 CRS + HIPEC) offers some answers:

  • 5-year OS 56% overall, rising to 69% after CRS + HIPEC
  •  Current WHO 2019 & Tang grading stratify outcomes poorly — we propose a simpler two-tiered system
  •  Systemic chemotherapy helps selected higher-risk patients, not everyone.”

Title: Long-term outcomes, pathological classification and prognostic factors in localised and advanced appendiceal goblet cell adenocarcinoma following cytoreductive surgery, intraperitoneal and systemic chemotherapy
