Work hard. Publish. Get the grant. Earn the position. Then things stabilize.
I believed it too. I built my entire professional identity around it.
What I’ve learned, from my own experience and from working with mid-career faculty, is that the stabilization doesn’t arrive the way you expected.
The demands shift.
The support structure changes. And the skills that got you tenure are not necessarily the skills that make the next decade sustainable.
