Nihar Desai, Hematology Chief Fellow at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Now out in Journals Oncology Practice (JCO).
A patient asked me, ‘What are my chances if I survive the first 2 years post allo-BMT?’
We did not have great data to answer their question, at least not in the contemporary era. So we set about to generate some data.
We questioned the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre allo-BMT dataset and conducted a landmark analysis at 2 years post allo-BMT. The median follow up was greater than 5000 person-years after the landmark.
The results were first presented at American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2025. We received the ASCO merit award for this work.
This was a marathon undertaking, took about 1 year to complete, but it is so gratifying to see it in print.
I informed the patient who asked me that question first! They were very happy knowing that their chance of being alive at 5 years post allo-BMT was close to 90%”
