“Could Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), an infection best known for its role in gastric cancer, also play a role in colorectal cancer?
A new study published in eGastroenterology adds to a growing body of research exploring this potential connection.
Researchers analyzed data from 43 studies and found that H. pylori exposure was associated with a 1.59-fold higher risk of colorectal cancer. Limited observational evidence also found an association between H. pylori eradication and lower CRC risk, but only after long-term follow-up.
The findings do not establish that H. pylori causes colorectal cancer. More prospective and interventional research is needed to understand whether there is a causal relationship and what it could mean for cancer prevention.
As researchers continue to investigate the factors that may contribute to CRC risk, this is an important area to watch.
