National Cancer Centre Singapore shared on LinkedIn:
“NCCS surgeon-scientist Prof Johnny Ong and team have developed a novel nanobody to treat late-stage cancer of the abdominal lining.
In collaboration with ASTAR Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (ASTAR IMCB), Singapore General Hospital and NUS Medicine, the team mapped the proteins in ascites – fluid that builds up in the abdomen and can fuel tumour growth in advanced peritoneal cancer. Published in Molecular Cancer last month, the study identified two proteins and developed E8, a novel nanobody that targets them, which was shown to suppress tumour growth in lab and human tissue models.
The findings have laid the foundation for the Melyorax Initiative, a new biologics research programme led by Prof Ong.
Named after the Latin word melior, meaning ‘better’. The initiative aims to develop new and improved treatment strategies for patients who currently have limited treatment options.
