MV Chandrakanth: ESMO26 Highlights Promising PE-PE Results in Oligometastatic Kidney Cancer

MV Chandrakanth, Academic Head and Medical Oncologist at Narayana Health, shared on X:

“PE-PE / ESMO 2026 / LBA88

Can pembrolizumab delay relapse after treating all visible metastases in oligometastatic RCC?

The randomized Phase II PE-PE trial suggests YES!

  • Median RFS: 25.4 vs 11.0 months
  • HR 0.47 / p = 0.024
  • 53% lower hazard of relapse or death

Interestingly, 94% of progression events were distant, highlighting the importance of occult systemic disease despite definitive local treatment.

OS remains immature. Toxicity requires consideration.

The takeaway: Perioperative pembrolizumab + metastasis-directed therapy significantly prolonged RFS in selected oligometastatic clear-cell RCC.

Promising Phase II evidence – not yet definitive. ”
